JAM Pro Pass: Exclusive Workshops

Thursday, May 30 @ 7:30 AM CST

Colonel Diane Ryan, Ph.D., Thayer Leadership

Participants will explore the concept BE-KNOW-DO as a foundational tool to illustrate how factors such as character, physical presence, personal and business values, professional competence, and leader actions shape an individual's identity. Using tangible examples from military and corporate America, participants assess what type of leader development approach works best for them while serving the needs of their organization. At the end of the day, leadership is not just about knowing and doing but about being – defining who we are in the world and what we stand for. Leading is a choice. We chose to BE a leader. We should therefore KNOW our values and character that influences what we DO.

 Takeaways:

  • Examine the Army’s BE, KNOW, DO strategy for developing leaders of character
  • Discover valuable insights on the difference between the concepts of leader competencies and identity
  • Identify participants’ organizational strategies for leader development and identify potential synergies with the West Point and Army approaches
  • Explore a relevant case study illustrating how to live your values
  • Identify core values that demonstrate your personal identity

Friday, May 31 @ 7:30 AM CST

Colonel Diane Ryan, Ph.D., Thayer Leadership

To “Be” a leader, you must understand and communicate who you are and what you expect, to best influence positive momentum in others. A leadership philosophy is the key tool for leaders to share their core identity with the people they lead and with whom they work. It is their written “handshake” with the organization—a way for leaders to share with people what is expected of them and what the team members, in turn, can expect from the leader. A leadership philosophy is also one way in which you hold yourself accountable; by sharing it with others, you allow others to hold you accountable, as well.

Participants will explore the concept BE-KNOW-DO is the foundational tool to illustrate how factors such as character, physical presence, personal and business values, professional competence, and leader actions shape an individual's identity. They will walk through the process of identifying their own values and how to extend those values into a comprehensive leadership philosophy.

Takeaways:

  • Examine the Army’s BE, KNOW, DO framework for developing leaders of character
  • Discover why values-based leadership builds trust, stirs loyalty, and creates an environment to accomplish greatness
  • Explore the concept of being an authentic leader and the importance of being a leader with both character and competence
  • Identify your values and consider how your behavior as a leader positively reflect these values
  • Analyze the value of a leadership philosophy as tool to lead through influence and foster transparency and trust
